When I was young, I used to buy my tees from local stores that used to put up these mind boggling tees in their display windows. Today, as I pass by the same shops, I hardly ever look. Now, my tees come from various shops that are opened up on the information supper highway.
A lot of things have changed, the saying..
If you build it, they will come..
No longer applies, to both, offline and online stores.
Keeping this fact in mind(along with a some others) I work according to a specific work flow. This is a culmination of 14 years of experience in this field and live examples.
1. A mission brief: Before anything, I always ask my customers/clients to write down their goals, missions, objectives, etc that they want to achieve with the help of their website.
2. Refinement, Analysis and Assessments: As the the process moves further, the goals, missions, objectives, etc., get more refined and a clear picture forms as to what the website can add to their bottom-line.
3. Strategies and Planning: Contrary to what one may imagine, there is a lot strategy and planning involved with the design and development of a website. The strategies might be offsite or onsite, again everything in this phase – Strategy and Planning – completely depends on the customers/clients goals and objectives with respect to the website.
4. Information Architecture, User Experience and UI: IA and UX/UI design come up next, and a basic mockup/sketch of the website is created and discussed with the client/customer.
5. Design: Next step would be to create a final PSD, which would be again discussed and revised based on the inputs from clients/customers.
6. PSD2HTML: Once the PSD, is finalized it goes under the knife and emerges out as xHTML/CSS.
7. Production: Once the HTML layout is agreed to, we move ahead with the development, and the site is under production, where in other processes get involved, which include, but are not limited to, bug testing, UI tests, IA tests, QA, etc.
8. Post-Production Presentation: Once the production phase is done, the finished product is again presented and discussed with the client and is revised based on the inputs from the client.
9. Post-Production Support: This completes the design and development of the website, and commences post-production processes, like 3 month bug testing and free support, content generation, marketing consultations, etc.
